Math, Reading, and Art Program

Our Math, Reading, and Art program aims at encouraging reading, mathematics and art skills. It was created by a resident of the community named Cristina. She wasn't able to start this program for a while, however, but through her relationship with Justice Compassion and Hope, that dream is now becoming a reality. Your help is critical to making this dream continue. So far, thirty children between the ages of 7 and 15 and twenty adults have the opportunity to better themselves and grow out of the vulnerability that can lead to sex trafficking, prostitution and drugs.

This tutoring program will make learning fun and help younger kids to stay in school. They need $5,000 for the coming school year.

Free in Books

Laiana dreamed of opening the first library in the community of Córrego da Volta in order to encourage kids to read and develop a love of reading and knowledge. When we met Laiana, she was teaching remedial classes and earning about $7 per month, as well as going to college to become a teacher. She then started to teach some additional kids for free because even though their mothers didn’t have money to pay, she had known the kids since they were young and wanted to help.

Laiana graduated from college a few months ago as a teacher. Since she became our partner and initiated Freedom in Books, which helps kids to read and incentivizes literacy. The new mini Community Center gives her the space she needed to house her library and teach reading classes, which allows us to boost the community toward literacy.

We received over 200 books from a businessman in Sao Paulo for Laiana to start the first public library in Córrego da Volta. This project will rise to success thanks to Laiana’s own efforts to pursue her dream: to encourage people to read and develop a love of knowledge.

Help us fully fund this program for the community! We need $3,500 for the next year.

Language Program

Through the English classes that our first campaigners offered through the mini community center, we immediately saw a high level of interest and need for additional support in the area of language learning. Many people of different ages, not only children and teenagers, but also young adults were very interested because the nearby city of Itarema is becoming a destination for international tourism. Kitesurfing in particular is growing a lot, drawing many foreigners to come practice the sport. The region has the perfect climate and environment for the sport. Through English classes, members of the community are able to communicate better with the foreigners and generate better work opportunities for themselves and their families. It is also through English classes that young people see a world of possibilities, generating hopes and dreams that encourage young people choose a path of study and development.

This program helps prepare students to find jobs after graduation. We need $4,000 to keep it going through the year.

Strong Base

Sports in northeastern Brazil are very important to young boys and girls. They offer community and support systems, a place to belong, and encouragement to stay in school. They are an important tool in our fight to keep kids out of gangs and sex trafficking. We started a soccer team! We were able to start a girls and boys team, and because of it we were able to take 13 girls from sex abuse, and 9 boys from being involved with local gangs. We need to continue this effort, and even expand it. Sports programs are a proven way to support these vulnerable kids and protect them from the sex trade.

JCH sponsors both the boys and girls soccer teams in Côrrego da Volta. Supporting this effort allows the team more practice time, help with equipment for those that can’t afford shoes, and the possibility of travel for competitions. We need $15,000 for this awesome effort!

Helping Hands

Project Helping Hands was born out of the vulnerability of a family of 16 people. They were unable to earn the most basic needs, and sex traffickers were trying to convince them to sell their 10-year old daughter for food. JCH was able to step in and provide food in the short term, and then over time business education and a workshop so they could expand their hammock weaving business. With a little investment and some entrepreneurial mentoring, they now have a successful hammock business and serve as an example in the community and inspire hope that giving in to traffickers isn’t the only option for families in need.

Bring entrepreneurship and sustainability through personal and business development. We need $8,000 to run this program through the year.

Health Assistance Program

This project is aimed at helping people in the Community of Córrego da Volta, who do not have access to a psychology professional. Our project seeks to treat mental and emotional health in cases of depression, anxiety, trauma, psychological and sexual abuse, as well as every need of the mind that can be treated by this specialty. We have arranged for qualified volunteers who are professionals in mental health services to treat members of the community, with a high level of professional ethics and privacy. All calls sessions are online. Today we help 10 people directly, which is also a boost to their families, taking the benefit of the treatment to a much larger number of people. A little knowledge on these subjects, coupled with knowing oneself and the practice of some self treatment, goes a long way to many people who suffer in the community. We currently have 2 volunteer professionals, but we want to help many more people since the need in the region is widespread.

In our community center we have a space where we can give basic physical and psychological assistance to the victims of abuse and trafficking. While we have many volunteers, we need $20,000 for medication and medical supplies in order to provide this basic medical care.
