Jamile and her sister Marina

Jamile and her sister, Marina lost their mother, grandmother, grandfather, and cousin in a tragic car accident at Christmastime 2020. This tragedy shattered the family. Jamile’s husband then got sick and was unable to work, and she took on the role of mother to her 2 brothers ages 15 and 7, and sister Marina, age 10 at the time.

Marina was targeted by sex traffickers after she lost her mother. Facing hunger and few work opportunities, it was increasingly difficult for Jamile to protect her from their coercion. Marina was extremely shy and was still grieving the loss of her family.

Jamile had her own son who was 6 years old, adn was also responsible for her own house. Since her mother died, she also began taking care of both households, which took a huge amount of her time and didn’t allow her to work. Without money to provide for her and her siblings, Marina became an ideal target for the predators that knew of their situation.

Justice, Compassion, and Hope provided food for this family, and followed up to monitor the situation. Jamile needed work that would allow her the flexibility to care for two households, and money for food and basic needs.

When we shared her story with you, many of you agreed with us that it is not OK for this family to live in such vulnerability. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to hire Jamile as our project coordinator in Itarema, Brazil! She will finally put her previous education and experience to work coordinating educational and entrepreneurial classes and activities to empower other families in the community!
